"First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out — because I was not a Socialist. Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out — because I was not a Trade Unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out — because I was not a Jew. And then they came for me — and there was no one left to speak for me. – Martin Niemöller ** To sit back hoping that someday, some way, someone will make things right is to go on feeding the crocodile, hoping he will eat you last - but eat you he will. - Ronald Reagan

My Worst Holiday

Every summer I go on a holiday with my family; these holidays are always very good, but there was one big exception – the Bulgarian one 5 years ago!

It all started with the road trip on the way there and continued till we got home. You see, we travelled by bus because of my fears of airplanes, but the trip turned out to be longer and more difficult than normal because the bus driver went the wrong way and we got lost. The normally 16 hour-long trip turned into 22. This was the first terrible thing, but we did finally arrive.

The motel wasn’t real good, either. Ugly black cockroaches were living there, with feelers feeling their ways into every nook and cranny. The staff was very impolite and nasty, and my overall opinion of Bulgarians became something of the same.

As a result of our bickering, we were only charged half price off board (breakfast and dinner), but there were only scant choices of food anyway and it wasn’t delicious. Furthermore, the restaurant quickly ran out of even that food.  However, my family and I did decide that this wasn’t going to be a problem, and that these two weeks WERE going to be good - we recognized that the beach was very nice and sandy, and we convinced ourselves that the weather was going to be great, as well.

However, on our third day, the worst thing came when it started raining and continued for 10 days - so sunbathing was out, swimming was out, along with every other kind of sun-loving activity. So then instead of doing any of those things, we decided to walk around the city in the rain and shop. Since I originally expected good weather, I took only summer clothes - I was so cold you couldn’t believe it. And to top that off, the city’s canal system wasn’t perfect, causing us to walk in water the whole time.

Those problems weren’t enough. We heard the news that the travel office which arranged our bus trip went bankrupt, so we didn’t have a bus with which to take us home. We frantically made phone calls because we were needing to get home.

Finally, a bus came for us, but there weren’t enough seats so we had to stand. I was so happy when we arrived home that I kissed the Budapest ground.

Overall, I think that was my worst holiday.
